Mahavir Jayanti, observed on April 10, 2025, is one of the most revered festivals in Jainism. Celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion, the day commemorates the birth of Lord Mahavir, the 24th and final Tirthankara, whose teachings continue to inspire millions in their pursuit of truth, non-violence, and spiritual growth.

Traditions That Reflect Devotion

The celebration includes sacred rituals like the Abhisheka, where idols of Lord Mahavir are bathed as a symbol of spiritual cleansing and renewal. Devotees also take part in Rath Yatras, grand processions carrying the deity’s idol through the streets, accompanied by the singing of Bhajans that glorify his virtues.

Temples across the country become hubs of activity, hosting prayers, spiritual talks, and community services. One of the core aspects of the day is charity — followers donate generously, supporting the less fortunate and reflecting Lord Mahavir’s deep-rooted philosophy of compassion and selflessness.

Historical Roots of the Festival

Lord Mahavir was born in 599 BCE in Vaishali, now part of modern-day Bihar. Though born into a royal household, he renounced worldly pleasures at the age of 30 to lead a life of asceticism. After 12 years of rigorous meditation and self-discipline, he attained Kevala Jnana (omniscience), becoming a beacon of spiritual wisdom for the ages.

His core teachings — Ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (truth), Aparigraha (non-attachment), among others — form the foundation of Jain philosophy, guiding people toward liberation through ethical living.

When Is Mahavir Jayanti Celebrated?

The festival is celebrated on the 13th day of the Chaitra month in the Hindu lunar calendar, usually falling between March and April. This year, it will be observed on Thursday, April 10, 2025, under the name Mahavir Janma Kalyanak, marking the sacred birth of the spiritual teacher.

The Spiritual Significance

Beyond its festive rituals, Mahavir Jayanti is a day of reflection — a reminder to walk the path of truth, peace, and non-violence. Devotees use this occasion to renew their dedication to the values taught by Lord Mahavir, embracing his message in both thought and action.

From spiritual discourses to community bonding, the day offers a beautiful blend of ritual, learning, and service, making it not just a celebration, but a spiritual milestone in the lives of Jain followers.
