Indian captain Rohit Sharma put an end to his rough patch with a brilliant century against England in the second ODI on February 9 at the Barabati Stadium, Cuttack. His outstanding performance led India to a six-wicket victory, sealing the series.

Rohit’s Century and New Records

  • Rohit scored 119 runs off just 90 balls, showcasing his classic batting style.
  • This was the second-fastest ODI century of his career, reaching 100 in just 76 balls with a strike rate of 132.22, hitting 12 fours and 7 sixes.
  • With this century, Rohit joined Sachin Tendulkar in an elite group of Indian batsmen and set a new world record.

Breaking Tendulkar’s Record

  • Rohit now holds the record for the most international centuries by an Indian player after turning 30, with 36 centuries, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s 35.
  • He also set a world record for the most ODI centuries (22) after turning 30, overtaking Sanath Jayasuriya and Tilakaratne Dilshan.

Milestone Achievements

  • Rohit has now scored 49 international centuries, moving past Rahul Dravid (48) to become the third-highest century-maker in international cricket history.
  • He has also hit more sixes (331) than Chris Gayle and is closing in on Shahid Afridi’s world record of 351 sixes in ODIs.
  • Among cricketers over 30, only Kumar Sangakkara (43 centuries) has more centuries than Rohit, while he is tied with Ricky Ponting and Matthew Hayden (36 centuries).
