India Launches New Bharat Forecast System to Improve Weather Predictions
May 26, 2025 — The Ministry of Earth Sciences is launching a new weather forecasting model today called the Bharat Forecast System (BFS). This new system has been developed in India and is expected to greatly improve the accuracy of weather predictions.
The model was created by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune and will be officially launched by Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh.
The Bharat Forecast System will replace the older Global Forecast System (GFS), which worked at a resolution of 12 kilometers. The new BFS works at a higher resolution of 6 kilometers, which means it can give more detailed and accurate weather information, especially for things like heavy rains and cyclones. This is very helpful for planning and disaster management.
The system is also open to the world — researchers from other countries can use its data, making it a tool for global cooperation.
The BFS was developed with help from major organizations like ISRO and the UK Met Office, and it marks a big step forward in India’s weather science and forecasting abilities.
