Apple Urges Immediate AirPlay Shutdown Amid Critical Security Threats
Apple has alerted users globally to turn off the AirPlay feature immediately after cybersecurity firm Oligo discovered multiple critical vulnerabilities in the protocol. Known collectively as “AirBorne,” these 23 flaws put iPhones and other Apple devices at risk of being hacked, especially when connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
AirPlay allows users to wirelessly stream audio and video to compatible devices such as smart TVs and speakers. However, the newly uncovered weaknesses enable hackers to remotely take control of devices without any user action, potentially installing malware, spying through microphones, or stealing personal data.
To protect users, Apple recommends disabling the AirPlay Receiver by going to Settings > General > AirPlay & Handoff. For those who still need to use AirPlay, it’s advised to restrict access to “Current User Only” to prevent unauthorized intrusions.
Users are also urged to keep their devices updated with the latest iOS versions, as Apple regularly issues security patches to fix such vulnerabilities. Additionally, installing reputable security software can provide an extra layer of defense against background attacks.
This is not the first time Apple has faced cybersecurity threats. Earlier this year, the company warned about sophisticated cyberattacks aimed at disabling USB Restricted Mode, a security feature designed to protect locked devices from data leaks.
Apple is actively working on a fix and stresses the importance of taking immediate action. Ignoring these warnings could leave devices vulnerable to silent cyberattacks, risking loss of privacy, theft of data, or even espionage.
Experts highlight the urgency of these measures, noting that prompt response is essential to safeguard personal information in the face of increasingly advanced cyber threats.
