Govt Mandates Certified Speed Detection Devices from July 2025 to Boost Road Safety
New Delhi: In a move aimed at improving road safety and ensuring accurate enforcement of speed limits, the government has announced that all radar-based speed detection equipment used for traffic monitoring will require mandatory verification and official stamping starting July 1, 2025.
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs issued a notification on Friday under the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011, mandating the regulation of microwave Doppler radar devices — a technology commonly used to monitor vehicle speeds on roads. The decision follows extensive consultations with key stakeholders including the Indian Institute of Legal Metrology, Regional Reference Laboratories, manufacturers, and vehicle certification bodies.
“These rules will come into effect from July 1, 2025, allowing ample time for manufacturers and enforcement agencies to comply,” the ministry said in its statement.
As per the new regulations, speed detection equipment must adhere to strict technical and operational standards. Devices will need to undergo proper calibration, function reliably under various environmental conditions, and be tamper-resistant. Only those that meet these criteria will receive official certification and stamping, making them eligible for field use.
The initiative is expected to offer a range of benefits:
