Mumbai, Nov.24: In an unsettling incident on November 19, an unidentified foreigner entered a DMart store in Andheri East, attempting to exchange dollar notes and forcibly taking cash from the counter. The entire episode was captured on the store’s CCTV cameras.
The Andheri police have taken action by registering an FIR and launching an investigation. The complaint, filed by store cashier Amruta Santosh Kavankar, outlines the sequence of events.
According to the police report, the incident occurred as Kavankar was concluding her shift and counting cash for the day. She handed over the cash to another employee, Dhiraj Vishwakrma. The foreigner approached Vishwakrma, seeking an exchange of dollar notes. Despite Vishwakrma’s refusal, the foreigner persisted, asking to see a Rs 500 note under the pretext of it being a higher denomination.
Vishwakrma, explaining that Rs 500 was indeed a higher amount, faced an unexpected turn of events. The foreigner demanded to see the Rs 500 note, opened the cash box containing lakhs of rupees, and snatched a bundle amounting to Rs 62,000. In a swift response, Vishwakrma chased the intruder, managing to retrieve the bundle. However, the foreigner escaped, leaving with Rs 5,500.
Upon discovering the missing amount, Kavankar promptly reported the incident to the Andheri police, leading to the registration of an FIR. Investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the foreigner involved in this audacious act.
