New Delhi, Nov 18: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) wrapped up its two-day camp focused on hearing pending cases of human rights violations in eight North Eastern (NE) states. The event aimed not only to address pending cases but also to raise awareness among officials of state governments.

During the camp, the Commission heard 56 cases in the presence of concerned officers from the North Eastern States and the complainants. The cases covered a range of issues, including the alleged arbitrary and unlawful division/partition of lands belonging to the Chakmas in District Changlang, Arunachal Pradesh, the reported rape of a 16-year-old tribal girl in Kokrajhar town, Assam, and the tragic incident involving the death of 57 persons, injuries to 18, and missing of 4 persons due to alleged negligence of the North East Frontier Railways during a project in Manipur.

One significant outcome of the Commission’s intervention was the issuance of a compensation of Rs 355.5 lakh, either already paid or in the process of payment by the states. Additionally, a meeting was held with the Chief Secretaries/DGPs of the NE States, urging them to submit action-taken reports on various Advisories issued by the Commission, covering topics such as Mental Health, Police Encounter, Bonded Labour, Right to Food & Safety, CSAM, Truck Drivers, Ocular Trauma, Prevention of Suicide in judicial and police custody, manual scavenging, and more.

The Commission emphasized the importance of timely submission of reports, particularly in cases where recommendations have been made regarding human rights violations. Furthermore, the State governments were urged to provide infrastructure to State Human Rights Commissions (SHRCs) and expedite the filling of vacant posts for the smooth functioning of the SHRC.
