Lonand Junction Gets a Modern Makeover, Set to Reopen on May 22
Satara, Maharashtra – Lonand Junction, a railway station in Satara district, is all set to welcome passengers with a brand-new look on May 22, 2025, after undergoing a major upgrade under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme of Indian Railways. The redevelopment, costing ₹10.48 crore, has turned the old colonial-era station into a modern and well-equipped rail hub.
From British-Era Stop to Key Railway Junction
Originally built during British rule, Lonand played an important role in connecting Pune, Satara, and Miraj. Over the years, the station became essential for transporting sugarcane and other farm produce from the area. With the addition of a double electric line and its classification as a Non-Suburban Group-6 (NSG-6) station, Lonand’s capacity and importance have significantly increased.

Lonand Junction supports a population of around 20,000 to 30,000 people from Lonand and nearby villages like Nira, Valha, and Wathar. It remains a vital link for students, farmers, and small businesses, with 16 trains stopping daily, including popular ones like the Koyna Express, Maharashtra Express, and Miraj Bikaner Superfast Express.
