The Maharashtra government has announced that online registrations for admissions under the Right to Education (RTE) Act will start in the second week of January. However, there are concerns about a big drop in school registrations this year. So far, only 4,240 schools in Maharashtra have registered, offering 55,413 seats. This is a significant decrease from the 2024-25 academic year, when 9,217 schools registered, providing 1,05,242 seats.

Sharad Gosavi, Director of Primary Education in Maharashtra, said that the government plans to make the admission process smoother for the 2025-26 academic year. They aim to announce the list of selected students and waiting lists by February or March, giving parents enough time to apply and confirm their child’s admission.

The original deadline for school registrations was December 31, but it has been extended to January 4 to encourage more schools to participate. Gosavi assured that the final number of registrations would not drop too much, as many schools have already applied, and their registrations are being verified.

Under the RTE Act, 25% of seats in entry-level classes at private, aided, and non-minority schools are reserved for children from disadvantaged backgrounds. The state also sets a uniform fee and reimburses private schools for the education of these students until Class VIII.

Here’s a breakdown of available seats in different districts:

  • Pune: 284 schools, 5,226 vacancies
  • Ahilyanagar: 318 schools, 3,079 vacancies
  • Kolhapur: 319 schools, 3,178 vacancies
  • Mumbai: 233 schools, 4,316 vacancies
  • Nagpur: 193 schools, 2,194 vacancies
  • Nashik: 304 schools, 4,229 vacancies
  • Thane: 290 schools, 6,009 vacancies

Parents can begin registering online for RTE admissions in the second week of January.
