AI-Based System to Track News and Counter Misinformation

Mumbai, March 6, 2025 – The Maharashtra government has approved the establishment of a media monitoring centre with an estimated budget of ₹10 crore. This initiative aims to track news coverage across print, electronic, social, and digital media, analyzing both positive and negative reports while identifying misinformation and assessing public sentiment on government policies.

According to a Government Resolution (GR) issued on Wednesday, the Directorate General of Information and Public Relations (DGIPR) will oversee the project. The centre will leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to monitor news trends and curb the spread of fake news that could lead to public unrest.

Key Features of the Monitoring Centre

📌 Operational Hours: 8 AM to 10 PM
📌 Comprehensive Reports: The system will generate daily, weekly, and monthly analyses on media trends and policy impact.
📌 Private Consulting Support: A consulting firm will assist in compiling reports, categorizing them by subject, region, and department.
📌 Real-Time Tracking: A dashboard and mobile app will offer real-time updates.
📌 Benchmarking with Other States: The DGIPR will study similar initiatives in other states before finalizing the framework.

This initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance media transparency, strengthen public communication, and counter misleading narratives in news and social media.
