Bhopal, Dec 13 – Jagdish Devda – who was sworn in as Madhya Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister on Wednesday – is a lawyer by profession and an erstwhile athletics champion who has been taking special interest in social service since his student days.


Born on July 1, 1957, in Neemuch district’s Rampura village in the family of Gendalal Devda; he possesses MA and LLB degrees. Devda’s spouse is Renu and the couple has two sons. In 1979, he was students’ union President at a college in Rampura and later became a Senate member at the Ujjain-based Vikram University.


Devda’s political career commenced when he assumed the mantle of Manasa, the divisional head of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. Subsequently, he was appointed the BJP’s Mandsaur District General Secretary. Devda entered the portals of the Assembly in 1990 and was also a member of the Tenth Vidhan Sabha in 1993.


A decade later, he was Minister of State for more than one department. In 2008, he held key portfolios such as Home, Jails, and Transport. Devda was re-elected in 2013 and 2018. In July 2020, he was bestowed with the Finance portfolio in the Shivraj Singh Chouhan Council.
