Hyderabad Police have arrested six Momo vendors on charges of culpable homicide after food poisoning resulted in the death of a woman and left several others hospitalized. The vendors, all originally from Bihar, face charges of selling adulterated and noxious food.
The incident began on October 25 when Reshma Begum (31), her daughters, and other customers bought Momos from a stall operated by the accused at a vegetable market in Singada Kunta, Banjara Hills. After consuming the Momos at home, they experienced severe symptoms of food poisoning, including vomiting and diarrhea. Tragically, Reshma Begum passed away two days later in the hospital.
Following a complaint filed by her brother, Farooq Hussain, the Banjara Hills Police registered a case and initiated an investigation. The six vendors—Armaan (23), Sajid Hussain (20), Md. Raees (23), Md. Sharukh (29), Md. Haneef (21), and Md. Rajik (19)—have been charged under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, adulteration of food, sale of noxious food, and acts endangering public safety.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Banjara Hills Division) S. Venkat Reddy stated that the accused were presented in court and subsequently sent to judicial custody. Following the incident, officials from the Food Safety Wing of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) inspected 110 Momo stalls, collecting 69 samples for laboratory testing. Some stalls were found to be operating without the necessary permissions.
In response to this and other cases of foodborne illness, the Telangana government has issued a statewide ban on mayonnaise prepared from raw eggs, effective October 30, due to concerns over food safety.
