With the popularity of litchis soaring during the summer months, concerns are rising over sellers using artificial colors and chemicals to make the fruit look fresher and more appealing. Experts warn that these practices not only mislead consumers but could also pose health risks.

However, consumers can protect themselves with a few easy checks at home. Here are some simple tips to identify naturally ripened litchis from chemically treated ones:

  • Check Inside the Fruit: Cutting open a fresh litchi reveals juicy, white flesh. If the inside looks dry, rubbery, or has red spots, it may have been tampered with.
  • Smell the Litchi: Natural litchis emit a mild, fruity aroma. A strong chemical or paint-like smell indicates possible artificial treatment.
  • Water Test: Drop litchis into clean water. Genuine fruits usually sink or float without coloring the water. If the water turns pink or red, the fruit might be dyed.
  • Feel the Skin: Authentic litchis have a slightly rough, leathery texture. A smooth, overly shiny, or oily surface suggests coating with wax or chemicals.
  • Seasonal Availability: Litchis are naturally available from May to July in India. Fresh-looking litchis sold outside this period may be chemically preserved or ripened.
  • Color Uniformity: Naturally grown litchis show mixed shades of pink, green, and red. Uniformly bright red fruits are likely artificially colored.
  • Tissue Test: Rubbing the peel with a wet tissue can reveal artificial dye if the tissue picks up color.
  • Buy From Trusted Sources: Purchasing from local farmers, organic vendors, or reputable stores reduces the risk of buying treated fruit.

Consumers are advised to stay alert and perform these simple tests to enjoy safe, chemical-free litchis during the season.
