Google Messages to Get ‘Delete for Everyone’ Feature in New Update

The GSMA Association, which manages RCS messaging, has announced a new update that brings exciting features, including the much-awaited ability to delete sent messages. Google Messages is preparing to introduce this feature soon.

The Universal Profile 2.7 update allows users to edit, recall, and delete messages for both themselves and the recipient. Currently, when users delete a message, it only disappears from their own device, but this update will remove it from both sides.

A recent analysis by 9to5 Google of the latest Google Messages beta version (20250131_02_RC00) found code suggesting that this feature is being developed. The new options include “Delete for me” and “Delete for everyone.” However, for this feature to work properly, all users in the conversation must have the latest app version—otherwise, deleted messages may still be visible to those with older versions.

When a message is deleted, users will see notifications such as “You deleted a message” or “Message deleted by its author.” If someone has an older version of the app, they might see “Sender attempted to delete a message.”

In addition to message deletion, Universal Profile 2.7 introduces new Replies and Reactions, including custom reactions. This means Android and iOS users won’t have to deal with converted reactions anymore. The update also brings inline replies between Android and iPhone users, an undo send option, and native message editing across different platforms.

Though these features are still in development, they will greatly improve messaging once released, making it easier for Android and iPhone users to communicate smoothly.
