Mumbai, Nov 01: In response to the challenging water scarcity situation in several districts due to below-average rainfall this year, the Maharashtra Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, declared drought in 40 talukas for the current kharif season.

Urgent assistance will be sought from the Centre to address the crisis. The Cabinet also directed the sub-committee, chaired by Relief & Rehabilitation Minister Anil Patil, to promptly decide on declaring drought in the remaining talukas. Additionally, the Cabinet approved assistance for victims of natural calamities within the revised criteria of three hectares, up from two hectares, under the State Disaster Response Fund.
