Chennai, Dec 5 – Chennai witnessed tragic consequences of Cyclone Michaung, with eight reported fatalities and 12 injuries due to rain-related incidents. The victims faced drowning and electrocution, underscoring the severity of the cyclonic impact on the city.
Among the reported incidents, an unidentified elderly man, approximately 70 years old, was found dead near the Vaidyanathan flyover. Additionally, electrocution claimed the life of Padmanaban (50) in the loan square road area, while Murugan (35) lost his life in Besant Nagar. An unidentified woman, around 60 years old, was discovered deceased at Foreshore Estate Bus Depot.
Electrocution incidents included Ganesan (70) in Thuraipakkam, and Bharath (53) suffered a fatality due to a compound wall collapse at Ellaiamman Kovil Street, Nochikuppam, near Marina Beach. Selvam (50), a security personnel at Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Choolaimedu, was found dead in rainwater within the school premises. Additionally, a 19-year-old youth, Mirajul Islam of Assam, residing at Kotturpuram Corporation School relief Centre, passed away due to epilepsy.
The rain-related incidents prompted hospital admissions for 12 individuals across the city. Meanwhile, a rescue operation unfolded as three employees of an LPG bunk generator room were trapped after a container fell into a nearby construction pit. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) joined efforts alongside the Fire and Rescue Services department to ensure the safety of those affected.
As Chennai grapples with the aftermath of Cyclone Michaung, the focus shifts to recovery and relief efforts to address the impact on the city’s residents.
