Shillong, Oct 4 : In a dazzling event that resonated with the beats of local talent, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma officially inaugurated Season 2 of the highly anticipated Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project (MGMP). The launch, held at the upscale commercial hub Khyndailad, Police Bazar in Shillong, brought music enthusiasts of all ages together for a vibrant celebration.
The MGMP, in collaboration with the Tourism Department and The Meghalayan Age, unveiled its second season in a melodious ceremony that featured unforgettable performances by incredibly talented artists. The ambiance at Khyndailad was filled with the rhythmic swaying of music enthusiasts to the tunes of three exceptional bands – Sur Ki Nongkyndong, Colours, and Na u Bnai. Their soul-stirring melodies left the audience spellbound, yearning for more.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, while launching MGMP Season 2, emphasized Meghalaya’s unique contribution to supporting independent music and musicians. He declared the project as the first of its kind in the country, showcasing the vibrant culture and nurturing local musicians.
“We embark on a journey to celebrate the soul of Meghalaya through music. Our state is a treasure trove of talent, and the MGMP Season-2 is our way of showcasing our vibrant culture and nurturing our local musicians,” Sangma said.
Highlighting the impact of MGMP, Sangma shared that in the first season alone, over 1600 artists performed on more than 3000 occasions. The revenue generated through tourism activities in the state was used to support artists, promoting the music industry and benefiting the local community.
For MGMP Season 2, the Chief Minister announced plans to expand the project, incorporating performances beyond music, including folklore, drama, acts, stand-up comedy, and more.
Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh expressed confidence that this initiative would propel Meghalaya to remarkable achievements. He envisioned Shillong becoming the nation’s music capital, echoing with the vibrant tunes of local talent.
In the upcoming season, the government’s commitment extends to reaching every corner of the state, ensuring that Meghalaya’s music resonates throughout the hills. Lyngdoh expressed optimism that these developments would position Meghalaya as the top destination for tourism in India.
