The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has unveiled significant updates to the syllabus and examination structure for Classes 10 and 12, placing a stronger emphasis on skill-based education and more flexible evaluation methods. The changes are designed to better equip students with practical skills and offer greater academic flexibility.

Class 10 Revisions

  • Students will now be required to select one skill-based subject, choosing from Computer Applications, Information Technology, or Artificial Intelligence.
  • Students must study either English or Hindi, which can be taken in Class 9 or 10.
  • A new provision allows students who fail a core subject (Science, Mathematics, Social Science, or a language) to replace it with a skill-based or an optional language subject they have passed when calculating their final results.
  • In a major shift, Class 10 board exams will now be conducted twice a year, in February and April, beginning this academic year.

Class 12 Revisions

  • Four new skill-based electives will be available for students:
    • Land Transportation Associate
    • Electronics and Hardware
    • Physical Activity Trainer
    • Design Thinking and Innovation
  • The updated syllabus will now cover seven areas of learning:
    • Languages, Humanities, Mathematics, Sciences, Skill Subjects, General Studies, and Health & Physical Education.
  • The Class 12 board exams will remain an annual event, with the 2026 exams scheduled to start on February 17.

Introduction of 9-Point Grading System

CBSE has also introduced a 9-point grading system for both Class 10 and 12 exams, where students’ marks will be converted into grades.

These reforms are aimed at enhancing skill development, offering more options for students, and ensuring greater flexibility in their academic journey.
