Mumbai, Nov 4: Atul Vasant Bedekar, the 56-year-old director of Bedekar Masala, succumbed to a prolonged battle with cancer on Friday. Known for their traditional Marathi food items such as pickles, spices, and chutneys, the Bedekars have been an integral part of the culinary landscape.
Bedekar’s forefathers established their brand in Bombay in 1910, originating from Ratnagiri, and became renowned for their globally appreciated pickles and spices. The family initially started with a grocery store, expanding as the spice and pickle business flourished, with branches across Maharashtra.
In 1960, Bedekars introduced the first P P leak-proof caps, paving the way for pickle exports. The Karjat factory currently produces around 600 tonnes of pickles per season. The Bedekars, over generations, have earned the trust of customers through quality products, adaptability to changing tastes, and business expertise.
Apart from being successful entrepreneurs, Bedekar built strong relationships with communities and customers over four generations, as stated by family sources. Atul Vasant Bedekar was cremated in South Mumbai this afternoon.
