Ulikkal, Kerala, April 28
In a rare display of compassion and swift legal action, a sparrow trapped for two days inside a sealed textile shop in Ulikkal town was rescued following the intervention of local authorities and the Kerala High Court.

The shop had been under a High Court-ordered seal for the past six months due to an unresolved trade dispute. The sparrow became stuck between the building’s glass façade and metal shutter, but legal barriers initially prevented the Forest Department and Fire Force from entering the premises to carry out a rescue.

Concerned locals, unable to access the shop, attempted to aid the distressed bird by passing water and rice through a small gap. However, the sparrow remained trapped, and the situation worsened under the intense summer heat. As media coverage of the incident grew, District Collector Arun K. Vijayan directed the local panchayat secretary to explore possible solutions.

District Judge Nisar Ahmed personally visited the site and promptly secured special permission from the High Court to temporarily unseal the shop. In the presence of the judge and local officials, the shutters were lifted, and the sparrow was freed, flying away to the cheers of the gathered crowd.

Reflecting on the rescue, Judge Ahmed stated,
“This incident reminds us that the law should never hinder the well-being of any living being. Every life matters, even that of a sparrow.”
He further praised the prompt action of the authorities and the compassion shown by the residents and media, noting that collaboration and empathy made the rescue possible.

The incident has since become a symbol of kindness triumphing over bureaucracy, highlighting the need for empathy even within the strict framework of legal procedures.
