Chennai, Oct 4: Four people were killed in a blast at a cracker manufacturing unit-cum-godown at Thillayadi village in Tarangambadi taluk in Mayiladuthurai district of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.
Several people were said to have suffered injuries in the blast which took place after afire broke out in the godown-cum-cracker making unit at around 1530 hrs.
Initial reports said the godown was damaged in the explosion and it was not immediately known how many people were trapped under the debris. Reports received at the Police headquarters here said four people were killed in the explosion.
The exact number of people injured in the incident was being ascertained. As a huge fire broke out following the blast, a thick some engulfed the area. Police and fire service personnel rushed to the spot and shifted the bodies to the government hospital for autopsy.
Efforts were on to bring the fire under control. Fancy and country-made crackers are being made and sold in the cracker unit owned by one Ramadoss.
