Malappuram, Dec 18 – Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan on Sunday instructed the police to remove the banners put up by activists of the Students Federation of India (SFI) – students wing of CPI(M) – at Calicut University campus.
The governor gave the orders after he found three big black banners on which were written comments personally attacking him.
Arif Khan reached the campus around 1 pm after attending a marriage function in Kozhikode and instructed the police officials to remove the banners. Later, the Governor talked with the Raj Bhavan Secretary and directed him to seek an explanation from the Calicut University Vice-Chancellor.
But the police did not remove it, so he came out of the guest house around 7 pm and asked the District police Chief S Sasidharan to remove it.
The District Police Chief removed the posters in the presence of the Governor.
Within minutes, SFI activists led by State Secretary P M Arsho rushed to the University campus at Thenjipalam and put up the banners again and also wrote on the roads of the University “Don’t spit hans and panparag on campus”.
They also raised slogans against the Governor and burnt his effigy. a poster erected by the organising committee related to a seminar which was scheduled to be inaugurated by the Governor on Monday.
On the last day, the Governor reached the University campus around 7 pm by road with police escort for a three-day stay at the guest house by ignoring the challenges of SFI that they would not allow him into any of the University campus, following a battle between SFI and Governor since last week.
Governor has attended the marriage of the son of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader Panakkad Syed Sadhikalli Shihab Thangal at Kozhikode,today and returned to the Varsity campus for overnight stay.
On December 18, he will inaugurate a seminar on “Sree Narayana Guru ” organized by the Bharatiya Vichar Kendram and Sanatana Dharma Chair in the evening and will return to Thiruvananthapuram in the night.
A large number of policemen were deployed at the University campus to provide security to the Kerala Governor.
SFI has been protesting against the actions of Chancellor Arif Mohammed Khan for allegedly inducting BJP supporters into the senate of Kerala and Calicut Universities. Following this protest, the SFI announced that they would not allow the Chancellor to enter any campus of the Universities.
