New Delhi, Nov 4: Despite the government’s various preventive measures, the air quality in the national capital on Friday reached the “severe” category, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) surpassing the 400 mark at several locations.
According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the AQI in the Lodhi Road area recorded 438, Jahangirpuri at 491, RK Puram at 486, and around IGI Airport (T3) at 473. The highest AQI was recorded at 498 in Mundka, followed by 496 in Bawana.
Multiple locations in Noida also witnessed a plunge in the AQI to the ‘severe’ category, with Sector 62, Sector 1, and Sector 116 recording 483, 413, and 415, respectively.
In response to the worsening situation, the government imposed Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Stage 3 on Thursday, enforcing a strict ban on construction and demolition activities in the entire National Capital Region.
The committee has also mandated daily water sprinkling, dust suppressants, and increased frequency of vacuum-based road sweeping. The closure of primary schools for two days, a ban on non-essential construction activities, and restrictions on certain fuel types were also implemented.
To combat vehicular pollution, the city government launched “Red Light On Gaadi Off” and plans to hire 1,000 private CNG buses to strengthen public transport. Additionally, the Delhi Metro will increase its train services by an additional 20 trips across its network.
Scientists warn of a potential rise in pollution levels over the next two weeks due to farm fires and unfavorable weather conditions. Health experts express concern about increased respiratory issues, especially among children and the elderly.
