Mumbai, Nov 9 : – Australia’s cricket legend Ricky Ponting expressed his belief that Glenn Maxwell’s incredible innings against Afghanistan in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup will instill great confidence in the team. Despite battling severe cramps and a back spasm, Maxwell’s unbeaten double-century secured Australia’s place in the knockout stages.
Ponting, a former Australian captain, described Maxwell’s performance as the best he has witnessed, surpassing even Ben Stokes’ iconic Test innings in 2019. He emphasized the significance of Maxwell’s innings for Australia’s World Cup campaign, highlighting the team’s ability to win crucial moments.
“I have been around a lot of games playing and calling, and I have never seen anything like that, and I’ll be very surprised if I see anything like that ever again,” Ponting exclaimed.
The victory marked Australia’s sixth consecutive win in the World Cup, setting up a high-stakes semi-final clash against South Africa. Ponting believes that Maxwell’s heroics could be the turning point for Australia, providing the team with the belief needed to pursue a sixth World Cup title.
“All the great teams that I’ve played with and all the great teams that I’ve been around have always had that belief that they can win from anywhere, and literally anywhere, even World Cup campaigns that I played in,” Ponting said.
“They’ve got this knack of being able to just win the big moments, and today was a huge moment as they qualify for the World Cup semi-finals now and hopefully onwards and upwards for them,” he added.
