The day after announcing his retirement from international cricket, Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin returned home from Australia on Thursday.

Ashwin, who made the surprising announcement during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, arrived in Chennai on Friday morning. At the airport, his father welcomed him warmly with hugs and kisses, while his mother embraced him with tears of joy. Ashwin’s wife and daughters accompanied him home, where he greeted neighbors and close friends, signing autographs and sharing hugs.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma had earlier informed at a press conference in Brisbane that Ashwin would not travel with the team to Melbourne for the Boxing Day Test and would return to India on Friday.

Ashwin’s decision to retire mid-series shocked fans and players alike, as two matches remained in the closely fought Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

In Chennai, Ashwin was welcomed home with traditional music, garlands, and heartfelt embraces from his parents. Despite the celebrations, Ashwin asked the media for privacy and did not address any questions.

While announcing his retirement, Ashwin shared an emotional message: “The cricketer in me might have retired, but the cricket lover in me will never stop. I’ll be cheering for you all from home. I’ve had an amazing journey, built incredible friendships, and truly enjoyed every moment.”

Reflecting on his career, he added: “This feels like my first Australian tour in 2011-12 when I saw legends like Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar transition out. I’ve cherished my time on the field and will deeply miss playing alongside my teammates.”
