Srinagar, Oct 12 : President Droupadi Murmu, during her maiden visit to the Valley after assuming the role of the country’s President, expressed her belief in the readiness of women and girls to take on significant leadership roles in the country. Addressing the 20th convocation of Kashmir University, President Murmu emphasized the pivotal role of education in the progress of the nation.

Starting her speech with the phrase “Yee mouj Kasheer” (O Mother Kashmir!), President Murmu drew applause from the gathering. Referring to the University of Kashmir’s motto, ‘let us move from darkness to light,’ she highlighted the transformative power of education, urging the youth to move towards the light of education and peace for the progress of the country.

President Murmu commended the responsible youth of Kashmir, expressing pride in their contributions to the nation. She encouraged students to actively engage in social service alongside their studies, believing that this would bring about social change and set an example.

Expressing happiness over the significant representation of girls in Kashmir University, President Murmu congratulated them, stating, “These promising daughters are the picture of our country as well as its destiny.” She expressed confidence in the potential impact of the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Act’ 2023, considering it a revolutionary step towards women-led development in the country.

Highlighting the importance of sustainable development, President Murmu stressed the need to preserve Kashmir’s heritage, particularly the Himalayan ecosystem. She urged the university to play a vigilant role in this regard, expressing satisfaction with ongoing work related to glaciology, biodiversity conservation, and the Himalayan Ice-Core Laboratory.

President Murmu referenced the National Education Policy’s emphasis on Indian Knowledge Systems, encouraging the dissemination of inspiring examples from our rich history. She emphasized the responsibility of the academic world to explore ways to integrate organically grown knowledge systems into contemporary circumstances.

In addition to the convocation, President Murmu paid tribute to fallen soldiers at the Army headquarters earlier in the day, highlighting the deep respect for the sacrifices made by the armed forces.”
