Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Nov 20 — Political leaders from various parties in Marathwada are gearing up for a ‘road roko’ agitation on November 20 in front of the Godavari Irrigation Development Corporation (GIDC) office. The protest is in response to the alleged failure to release the rightful quota of 8.6 TMC water into the Jayakwadi dam in the region from upstream dams in Nashik and Ahmednagar districts.
Congress leader Anil Patel, addressing the media in a press conference, highlighted the legal challenges faced by the GIDC’s order to release water to Marathwada. Despite a court stay, Patel claimed that local political leaders were influencing the state government not to release the stipulated water quota.
The consequences of this alleged denial, including scarcity in fodder and water for animals, have significant impacts on agriculture and industry in the region, Patel emphasized. He urged immediate action from the government, calling for the release of water into the Jayakwadi dam without succumbing to local pressures.
Patel further demanded police arrangements to prevent water theft and warned of legal actions, including petitions in the Supreme Court and contempt petitions in the Bombay High Court, if the water quota is not released promptly. The situation, he warned, may escalate into a severe water movement if immediate action is not taken.
