Mumbai, April 18: In a significant push toward green mobility, the Maharashtra Government is set to waive toll charges for electric vehicles (EVs) on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg as part of its upcoming EV policy.

According to a report by Hindustan Times, the initiative aims to boost the state’s EV adoption rate to 25%. The proposal, drafted by the transport department, is expected to be implemented starting May 1, pending approvals from the finance and other related departments. Sources within the state secretariat suggest the cabinet is likely to give the green light soon.

Currently, EVs account for just 6% of the 48.82 million registered vehicles in Maharashtra, as per the Economic Survey of Maharashtra 2025. In comparison, Delhi has a 12% EV share, while Karnataka and Tamil Nadu stand at 9% and 8%, respectively.

The proposed toll exemption follows Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ recent announcement withdrawing the plan to levy a 6% motor vehicle tax on EVs priced above ₹30 lakh.

In a related development, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has confirmed that toll rates on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway will remain unchanged until April 2030. However, tolls on the Old Mumbai-Pune Highway are expected to rise starting next April.

These initiatives are part of Maharashtra’s broader efforts to promote eco-friendly transportation and establish the state as a leader in sustainable mobility.
