Maharashtra Cabinet Approves Maratha Reservation in Marathwada, Endorses Justice Shinde Committee's Recommendations

Mumbai, Oct 31: The Maharashtra Cabinet, headed by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, on Tuesday approved the preliminary report of Justice Sandeep Shinde Committee recommending action plan for giving reservation to the Maratha community in Marathwada region in Kunbi caste category.

The Shinde Committee mentioned in his report that around 13,498 old records have been found in eight districts of Marathwada.The work of checking the Nizam-era records has been going on and the cabinet gave approval to promptly start the work of such entries.

The government also gave approval for giving a local caste certificate by digitising and translating these documents from Moddi and Urdu languages. According to the recommendations of Shinde Committee’s report, the procedure for giving Kunbi caste certificates to Marathas in Marathwada can be adopted.

Apart from this, the report recommended to check the social and educational backwardness of the Maratha community.

The Cabinet also gave approval to the Backward Class Commission to collect new empirical data.Considering the circumstances created in some districts of the state due to scanty rainfall, the state cabinet gave its nod for help to the first phase of Kharif season.

It has tasked the cabinet sub-committee to decide early on necessary concessions for these categories.
