Leopard Rescued from Well in Kannur Dies Despite Efforts by Forest Officials

Kannur, Nov 30 – The forest officials rescued Leopard that had accidentally fallen into a well at the residential area of Peringathur near Panoor in the district, died on Wednesday.


Forest officials lifted the big cat around 2000 hours, after 12 hours of the incident, when noticed by the local residents by tranquilizing it. Later shifted to Kannavam forsst shelter for observation. During the medical examination about the weakness, it was found dead around 2030 hrs, Official sources said.


There is no external injuries, however, internal bleeding might cause to death and the postmortem will reveal more details . Postmortem will be held at Sulthan Bathery in Wayanad, tomorrow. Sources added.
The local residents alerted the forest officials, and Chokli police , when they noticed the leopard inside the well, in swimming condition around 1000 hrs. Forest officials rushed to the spot and evicted the people from the site and first they put a big log for floating the leopard . Later, the water of the well was fully drained by using a motor around 1700 hrs.


Rapid Response Team (RRT) from Wayanad led by Veterinary surgeon Ajesh Mohan Das and district forest officials lifted the leopard in a net, and half a way of the well, Dr Ajesh Mohan Das administering tranquilizer dosage. WIthin five minutes, the big cat was tranquilised and then the RRT lifted out the leopard on the net and shifted to a cage around 1800 hrs.


DFO said ” might suspect that the Leopard is an exclusive wild animal, and it came through a river into residential areas or from Kannavam forest, which was around 20 KM from Panoor”.


The Leopard fell into the well of one M Sumesh,s house premises at South Aniyaram near Peringathur on Wednesday. This is the first time that a wild animal was seen in the residential area at Panoor.
