Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 06: Kerala Tourism Minister P A Mohamed Riyas announced the government’s plan to introduce a comprehensive master plan, titled ‘Mission 2030,’ for the tourism sector next year. The master plan aims to provide policies and recommendations for increasing tourism’s contribution to the state’s GDP from the current 12 percent to 20 percent.
Addressing a seminar as part of Keraleeyam, Riyas stated that discussions with the Excise Minister would determine decisions regarding dry days. He emphasized the need for rapid decentralization in the tourism sector to ensure statewide benefits.
Riyas highlighted the focus on leveraging private investment in 2024, acknowledging that government efforts alone cannot elevate the state’s global tourism presence. The Tourism Investors Meet on November 16 will play a crucial role in fostering discussions and opportunities with investors.
The Minister outlined plans for Heli tourism and cruise tourism in collaboration with private partners in the coming year. Additionally, the renovated 132-year-old Feroke Bridge across the Chaliyar River is set to be dedicated in 2024. Riyas emphasized the importance of public and private sector cooperation in implementing various projects.
Commending the ‘Kerala Model’ of tourism development for its sustainability and inclusivity, Riyas mentioned the successful post-pandemic revenge tourism, driven by trendy attractions like the Vagamon Glass Bridge and Cinema Tourism.
Tourism Secretary Biju K highlighted that the tourism sector contributes 10 percent of the state’s GDP and generates employment for approximately 15 lakh people. The sector’s revenue in 2022 amounted to Rs 35,168.42 crore, with foreign exchange earnings of Rs 2,792.42 crore and direct earnings from domestic tourists reaching Rs 24,588.96 crore.
Dr Harold Goodwin from the International Centre for Responsible Tourism praised Kerala’s exemplary practices in responsible tourism. The seminar also featured contributions from various stakeholders in the tourism industry.
