JioStar Introduces JioHotstar: A New Streaming Platform
JioStar has launched JioHotstar, a new streaming platform that combines JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar. With 500 million users and 300,000 hours of content, it offers both original and international shows with a strong focus on cricket streaming.
What’s Available on JioHotstar?
JioHotstar will feature international content from major studios like Disney, Peacock (NBCUniversal), Warner Bros., Discovery, HBO, and Paramount.
Cricket fans can enjoy live streaming of major tournaments such as:
- ICC events (including the IPL and WPL)
- Domestic cricket leagues
- Other major sports events like the English Premier League, Wimbledon, Pro Kabaddi League, and ISL
Advanced Streaming Features
JioHotstar comes with Ultra HD 4K streaming, multi-angle viewing, AI-powered insights, and real-time stats overlays, making the viewing experience more interactive and immersive.
Pricing & Subscription Plans
JioHotstar offers a free ad-supported tier, while paid subscriptions start at ₹149 for three months. Users can also choose an ad-free premium option for ₹499.
Key Changes:
- The era of completely free IPL streaming is ending. While some content is free, users will eventually need a subscription based on their viewing habits.
- Existing Disney+ Hotstar and JioCinema users will be automatically moved to JioHotstar.
Rebranding & Ownership Details
- The Disney+ Hotstar app has been renamed JioHotstar on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, featuring a new logo.
- The user interface remains the same as Disney+ Hotstar for now, but updates may come in the future.
- The Hotstar.com website now directs users to JioCinema content on JioHotstar.
Disney & Reliance Partnership
JioHotstar is the result of a merger between Disney and Reliance Industries, which was approved in August last year. In November, the two companies formed a joint venture.
- Reliance owns 60% of the new company (16% directly and 47% through Viacom18).
- Disney holds a 37% stake in the business.
With this merger, JioHotstar is set to become a major player in India’s streaming industry, offering a mix of global entertainment and premium sports content.
