Srinagar, Nov 17 – The anti-militancy operation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district entered its second day on Friday with a renewed exchange of fire between militants and security forces in the morning.

The encounter, which began on Thursday afternoon, unfolded after security forces launched a joint operation in the Samno, Damhal Hanjipora area, acting on intelligence regarding the presence of militants.

Officials reported, “During the search operation, as the joint search party approached the suspected spot, the hiding terrorists fired indiscriminately on searching parties. The security forces retaliated effectively, leading to an encounter.”

Throughout the night, joint forces maintained a tight cordon in the area, and intermittent exchanges of fire occurred between the two sides.

The operation to flush out militants resumed at first light on Friday, witnessing a fresh exchange of fire. Officials confirmed, “The operation is still ongoing.”

This marks the second gun battle in Kashmir since Wednesday. On that day, two militants, including top launching commander Bashir Ahmed Malik, were killed in a confrontation near the Line of Control in Uri sector, Baramulla district.

The Army revealed that Malik had been active for over three decades and played a significant role in Pakistan-enabled cross-border terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. Colonel Raghav, commanding officer of the army’s 8 Rashtriya Rifles, stated during a media briefing on Thursday, “He was an important terrorist launch commander for terror organizations from Leepa in the north to the areas in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir, opposite Rajouri in the south.”
