Satara, Oct 5: With Indian scientists working in the field of climate research having achieved great success in recent past, India has become self-sufficient in the meteorological science, averred Union Earth Sciences Minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday.
Addressing a press conference at hill station of Mahabaleshwar in the district, he said that the achievement of Indian scientists is not only being appreciated all over the world, but also fishermen and farmers of the country were benefiting from advances in climate research.
Unlike before, when aircraft was being used for research of clouds, the establishment of Cloud Research Centre at Mahabaleshwar due to its natural elevation was helping scientists to study clouds, rain and atmospheric conditions and weather systems such as aerosols, winds, temperature, humidity, the Minister said.
However, there was need for more research to get information about cloudbursts, floods and landslides in advance, he pointed.
Rijiju also said that efforts should be made to promote Mahabaleshwar as an international tourist destination and promised to organise an international conference there.
Noted scientist Dr G Pandithural was present on the occasion.
