In a heartwarming and miraculous turn of events, two compassionate doctors came to the rescue of a baby suffering from congenital heart disease during a Delhi-bound IndiGo flight from Ranchi. Dr. Nitin Kulkarni, an IAS officer and medical professional, along with Dr. Mozammil Pheroz from Ranchi Sadar Hospital, were onboard the flight when they sprang into action to save the distressed infant.

Approximately twenty minutes into the flight, the IndiGo air crew urgently called for medical assistance to aid a baby experiencing severe breathing difficulties. Without hesitation, Dr. Kulkarni and Dr. Pheroz stepped forward to provide essential medical aid.

Using an adult oxygen mask and other emergency medications, the doctors administered vital oxygen support to the ailing child, whose parents were en route to AIIMS, Delhi, for the treatment of the baby’s congenital heart condition.

Upon landing an hour later, the baby was promptly transferred to the care of a medical team who continued to administer oxygen support. Dr. Kulkarni and Dr. Pheroz’s quick intervention had undoubtedly played a pivotal role in saving the infant’s life.

Dr. Kulkarni shared that the baby had been diagnosed with a congenital heart condition known as patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). He further explained that they administered drugs, including Theophylline and Dexona, from the onboard medical kit, which significantly aided the baby’s condition.

Monitoring the baby’s progress, they used a stethoscope to observe the heartbeat, as the lack of an oximeter made it challenging to assess oxygen saturation levels. The initial 15-20 minutes were particularly tense, but eventually, the baby’s condition improved. His eyes returned to normal, and he began to vocalize, offering reassurance to the doctors.

Dr. Kulkarni praised the IndiGo cabin crew for their invaluable assistance throughout the ordeal. The flight landed at 9:25 am, where a medical team immediately provided continued oxygen support. Dr. Kulkarni expressed his satisfaction and relief, reflecting on more than an hour of intense efforts that ultimately saved the baby’s life.

Passengers onboard the flight also extended their gratitude to the heroic doctors. This heartwarming incident serves as a testament to the selflessness and dedication of medical professionals who go above and beyond to save lives, even at 30,000 feet in the air.
