New Delhi, Dec 18 – Critics of the government may try to corner the government over economic issues especially jobs but Finance Ministry has termed the year 2023 as a year of many highs highlighting record e-way bills and return-filing on a single day suggesting that the Indian economy is on fast track.

“Year 2023 has been a year of new highs in a single day, in terms of highest e-way bill generation, highest payment transactions, highest tax collection and highest return filing,” Finance Ministry said in a post on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) noting the milestones in the area of indirect tax.

As per the official data, the e-way bill generation count hit a record high of 42.28 lakh in a single day on September 30 this year.

An e-way bill is an electronic pass generated by businesses for movement of goods. Record e-way bill generation shows increased economic activities.

The official data from Goods and Service Tax Network (GSTN) showed that the country witnessed the highest payment transactions of 9.78 lakh in a day on April 20.

Further, the highest number of e-invoices (7.58 lakh) in a month were generated in September 2023.

The highest return filing in a day was recorded on July 20 when the number reached 32.31 lakh.

As per GSTN data, the highest tax collection in a day was registered on April 20 with collections topping Rs 68,228 crore.

Highlighting achievements in the area on indirect taxes, Finance Ministry said that a new online facility has been introduced for taxpayers to clarify the variation in tax liability and difference in Input Tax Credit (ITC).

“GSTR -3B return filing made easier with enhancement in Form GSTR-3B and introduction of Electronic Credit and Re-claimed statement,” it said.
