Bhopal/New Delhi, Dec 18 – Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday appointed erstwhile state minister Jitendra (Jitu) Patwari as the party’s Madhya Pradesh unit head – a position hitherto held by former chief minister Kamal Nath.

“The party appreciates the contributions of outgoing PCC president Kamal Nath,” Congress said in a press note.

The decision came days after the grand old party’s defeat to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly polls.

Another ex-minister, Umang Singhar, assumed the mantle of the Assembly’s Leader of the Opposition, a post that was once held by his aunt and erstwhile deputy chief minister, Jamuna Devi, since deceased.

A Congress release said that Hemant Katare would be the Deputy Leader of the Opposition. He is the son of former state Home Minister late Satyadev Katare who at one time served as Leader of the Opposition.

Meanwhile, in Chhattisgarh, Congress appointed Charan Das Mahant as the CLP Leader of Chattisgarh with immediate effect and Deepak Baij will continue as the Chhattisgarh Congress Committee president, the statement said.
