Chennai, Nov 17- In a significant breakthrough, the Chennai Cyber Crime police apprehended five individuals, including two women, on Thursday evening, in connection with a data theft scam.
The arrests were made following a complaint filed by a resident of the Triplicane area on October 22. The complainant, a Finance Manager at a software firm providing products to banking companies through Amazon Web Services (AWS), reported unauthorized and fraudulent hacking in their clients’ AWS accounts.
The Cyber Crime Police initiated an investigation, leading to the tracing of the fraudster’s IP address. The trail led to Edison (29) in suburban Neelankarai, an employee of the affected company.
Following Edison’s confession, the police arrested Ramkumar (27), Kavya VasanthaKrishnan (29), Ravitha Devasenapathy (40) from Bengaluru, Karnataka, and K.Karuppaiah (26) from Pudukkottai District.
During the arrests, authorities seized 7 laptops, 1 iPad, and 4 cellphones from the accused. The suspects were produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody.
