Patna, Oct 2: On Monday, Bihar released the historic Caste Census report, a moment described as significant by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. He noted that the release coincided with the auspicious day of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary.
In a tweet, Kumar announced the release of the caste census report and expressed his intention to convene an all-party meeting soon for discussions on the matter. Notably, the resolution for the caste census had received unanimous support from 9 parties in both the Assembly and Bihar Legislative Council.
According to the released caste census report, the population of Backward Classes stands at 3,54,63,936, constituting 27.12 percent of Bihar’s total population of 13.07 crores. Similarly, the population of Extremely Backward Classes (EBCs) is 4,70,80,514, making up 36.01 percent of the total population. Scheduled Castes account for a population of 2,56,89,820, representing 19.65 percent of the total population, while Scheduled Tribes (STs) have a population of 21,99,361, constituting 1.68 percent of the state’s total population. The population of the unreserved category is 2,02,91,679, making up 15.52 percent of the total population of the state.
