Vijayawada, Nov 21: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Monday directed the officials to pay 80 percent compensation to the owners of the fishing boats which were gutted in the fire mishap that took place in Visakhapatnam fishing harbour past midnight on Sunday.

When the officials told him that 36 boats were totally gutted and nine boats were partially damaged in the fire mishap, the Chief Minister observed that it was a great loss to the fishermen.

He told the officials to show humanity and pay compensation up to 80 percent of the value so that the victims would be able to withstand the loss and restart their activity with confidence.

The government should stand by the fishermen in such difficult circumstances, he said.

They informed Reddy that the loss caused by the fire mishap was estimated to be around Rs 12 crore, according to preliminary assessment and a final report is being prepared.

The officials also told him that Fisheries Minister Dr. S. Appala Raju along with the District Collector visited the accident site and assured the victim families of Government support.

Earlier, on being informed of the fire mishap, the Chief Minister expressed shock and ordered the Minister and District Collector to rush to the accident site.
