All Private Pre-Schools in Maharashtra Must Register Online, Says Government
Mumbai, April 25, 2025 — In a major push to regulate early childhood education, the Maharashtra government has made it compulsory for all private pre-primary institutions catering to children aged 3 to 6 years to register on a newly launched digital platform.
The directive was issued by the School Education and Sports Department as part of efforts to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the State Curriculum Framework for the Foundation Stage (SCFFS) 2024. Deputy Secretary Tushar Mahajan released the official circular earlier this week.
The move aims to bring private institutions—such as Nursery, Jr. KG, Sr. KG, and Pre-Schools—under a structured system of data collection and monitoring. While government-run centres like Anganwadis and Balwadis already maintain regular records, there has so far been no centralized database for privately run pre-primary schools.
To address this, the state has introduced the “Pre-School Registration Portal”, which will collect vital information on each institution’s management structure, enrollment numbers, infrastructure, and staffing.
All private pre-primary centres are required to register on the portal within seven days of the notification. The portal can be accessed via the state education department’s official website at education.maharashtra.gov.in, under the “Pre-School Registration Portal (ECCE)” section.
The directive underscores the importance of the foundational stage—comprising three years of pre-primary education followed by Grades 1 and 2—as defined in the NEP’s 5+3+3+4 academic structure, which prioritizes quality early education for children between the ages of 3 and 8.
The implementation of the portal will be overseen by the Director of Primary Education, who has been instructed to ensure compliance and submit regular progress reports.
The official circular, digitally signed and marked with reference number 202504241129194221, is available for download on the Maharashtra government’s website.
