A 76-year-old doctor from Pimpri Chinchwad was scammed out of Rs 28 lakh by cybercriminals. The scammers tricked him by posing as a CBI officer and threatening him with arrest over a fake credit card fraud case.

On November 28, while attending to patients, the doctor received a WhatsApp call from someone pretending to be a CBI officer named Ravi Kumar. The caller told him that he was being watched and that he was under “digital arrest.” The scammer claimed that if the doctor didn’t pay Rs 20 lakh, an arrest warrant would be issued against him. Even though the doctor denied being involved in any fraud, the caller insisted that notices from the Supreme Court and Enforcement Directorate (ED) were issued against him.

The fraudster claimed the doctor was implicated in a credit card scam, allegedly receiving Rs 20 lakh in commission on a Rs 1 crore transaction. The caller then transferred the doctor to someone posing as a Supreme Court lawyer, who asked for his personal and financial details to help clear his name.

The scammer sent fake messages from the Supreme Court and ED to the doctor’s phone, assuring him that they could prevent his arrest if he paid Rs 28 lakh. Following the instructions, the doctor went to the bank and transferred the money to two different accounts.

The police are investigating the case, and the doctor’s loss highlights the dangers of cyber fraud.
