40-Year-Old Nisa Unnirajan Overcomes Multiple Challenges to Secure a Top Rank in UPSC
Thiruvananthapuram, April 30: At an age when many civil service aspirants have either achieved their goals or moved on, 40-year-old Nisa Unnirajan from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, has defied all odds to emerge victorious in the 2024 UPSC Civil Services Examination, securing an impressive All India Rank of 1000 in her seventh attempt. A mother of two, a full-time employee, and someone living with a hearing disability, Nisa’s journey is one of sheer determination and resilience.
Nisa’s success story is much more than just a rank—it’s a testament to overcoming personal, professional, and physical challenges. Eligible for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) through the disability quota, her triumph shows that with courage and perseverance, no barrier is too great.
Although Nisa had long harbored a dream of becoming a civil servant, it wasn’t until she was 35 that she fully committed to preparing for the UPSC exams. Balancing her preparation with raising two daughters—Nandana (11) and Thanvi (7)—was a daunting task, but Nisa faced it head-on with quiet determination. Her husband Arun, a software engineer, and her parents, retired police clerk Unnirajan and homemaker Jayasree, have been her pillars of support throughout this challenging journey.
Each unsuccessful attempt taught Nisa valuable lessons. “Every setback was a stepping stone in my learning process,” she shared with The Times of India. Her breakthrough came when she joined a coaching institute in Thiruvananthapuram, which provided her not just academic guidance but also emotional support. Kottayam sub-collector Ranjith, who also has a hearing impairment, was another major source of inspiration for her.
Nisa’s path to success wasn’t the traditional one. She tailored her study schedule to fit her unique circumstances, drawing strength from motivational books, success stories, and an unwavering belief in herself.
Now, as she prepares to take on the responsibilities of an IAS officer, Nisa Unnirajan sends a powerful message: age, disability, and family obligations should never limit one’s dreams. “It’s never too late to dream,” Nisa says, adding, “And no dream is too big.”
Her achievement stands as a beacon of hope for anyone who dares to dream beyond their challenges and circumstances.
