The Thailand Embassy in New Delhi has announced that Indian passport holders will be able to apply for e-visas starting January 1, 2025. This new system is designed to make the visa application process easier, alongside the existing visa-on-arrival option popular with Indian tourists.
Key Details:
- Application Process: Indians can apply for e-visas online at thaievisa.go.th. Applications can be submitted individually or through representatives.
- Visa Fees: Payment must be made offline, as directed by Thai embassies and consulates. Visa fees are non-refundable.
- Visa Exemption: The current 60-day visa exemption for tourism and short business visits remains in place until further notice.
Boost for Indian Tourism in Thailand
Thailand has long been a favorite destination for Indian travelers, with over 2 million Indians visiting in 2019. While the COVID-19 pandemic caused a drop in arrivals, the numbers have rebounded, significantly contributing to Thailand’s economy.
Government Efforts to Revive the Economy
Thailand’s government, led by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, is addressing economic challenges, including a $500 billion household debt crisis—the highest in Southeast Asia. Steps include a three-year interest suspension for about 1.9 million borrowers with loans for housing, cars, and small businesses.
The e-visa launch, combined with these economic measures, is expected to attract more Indian tourists and businesses to Thailand, enhancing its position as a key destination. Additional details about the e-visa system will be shared soon.
