Bhubaneswar, Nov 29 – Odisha is set to embark on a mission to achieve self-sufficiency in egg production, targeting an impressive 120 lakh eggs per day by the fiscal year 2024-25, as announced by Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister Ranendra Pratap Swain. The state government is gearing up to formulate a comprehensive roadmap to realize this ambitious goal.
Minister Swain unveiled the state’s three-pronged strategy during the inauguration of a workshop in Bhubaneswar. This initiative is part of the 5T program, aiming to boost egg production through a multifaceted approach. The plan includes incentives, subsidies, and schemes to support layer poultry farming across commercial, semi-commercial, and backyard sectors.
Layer poultry has emerged as a leading sector in Odisha, contributing significantly to entrepreneurship and economic growth in the state. Minister Swain highlighted the substantial progress made in egg production, citing an increase in per capita egg availability from 50 eggs per year in 2018-19 to 67 eggs in 2022-23.
Under the Odisha Poultry Policy-2015, entrepreneurs in the poultry sector enjoy a 100 percent stamp duty exemption on land purchase for poultry farms anywhere in the state. The government is also providing lucrative subsidies for layer farming to encourage further growth in the sector.
The daily egg production in Odisha witnessed a remarkable surge from about 65 lakh eggs in 2019-20 to approximately 1.03 crore eggs per day. This represents a 58 percent increase in the last four years, with a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of around 27 percent in the sector.
Minister Swain highlighted the success of commercial layer farming, with 157 established farms producing 90 lakh eggs daily. Additionally, the state’s medium-scale 1000 capacity layer farm scheme under the Mukhyamantri Krushi Udyog Yojana has gained widespread appreciation, contributing to the overall egg production in the state.
Rajya Sabha MP Mans Ranjan Mangaraj commended the significance of layer farmers in driving the state’s increased egg production. He expressed confidence that by 2025, Odisha will achieve self-sufficiency in egg production.
Asit Kumar Tripathi, Chairman of the Western Odisha Development Council, emphasized the state government’s financial support for setting up layer farms under various schemes, contributing to Odisha’s emergence as a prominent player in the egg production sector.
With these concerted efforts and supportive initiatives, Odisha aims to strengthen its position as a self-sufficient hub for egg production, contributing to the economic prosperity of the state.
