Srinagar, Nov 23: Mainstream politicians including three former chief ministers have expressed condolences to the families of soldiers who were killed on Wednesday during an ongoing gun battle in Rajouri district of Jammu region.

Four army personnel including two officers were killed in the encounter in Rajouri district that is still underway.

Former CM and National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah said there were continuing efforts to spread militancy into hitherto peaceful areas of Pir Panchal region.

“Terrible news from Rajouri where 4 army personnel including 2 officers have laid down their lives in the line of duty. While condemning the continuing efforts to spread militancy into hitherto peaceful areas of Pir Panchal region I send my sincere condolences to the families of those who offered the ultimate sacrifice today,” Omar posted on X.

Peoples Democratic Party president and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti criticised the government of India for claiming that all is well in J&K.

“Heartbreaking to see officers & jawans lose their lives in the line of duty despite GOIs misleading false claims that all is well in J&K. The price of this facade is being borne by them & innocent civilians who’ve become collateral damage in unabated violence. My deepest sympathies with their families & loved ones,” she said in a post on X.

Chairman Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) and former chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said that “terrorism is a curse against humanity and deserves the strongest condemnation.”

“Today in Rajouri we lost 2 brave officers and 2 jawans in the line of duty fighting for our better & secure tomorrow while one soldier is critically injured. My heart goes out to the families of these bravehearts & share their grief. I also pray for the speedy recovery of the injured one. Terrorism is a curse against humanity and deserves the strongest condemnation!” Azad posted on X.

Jammu & Kashmir Apni Party president Altaf Bukhari said it is agonising to witness such incidents intermittently across the length and breadth of Jammu and Kashmir.

“Salute to the four bravehearts, including two officers, who have laid down their precious lives in the line of duty in Rajouri. Due sympathies with the bereaved families in this hour of grief and prayers with those injured. It is agonising that we have been witnessing such incidents intermittently across the length and breadth of Jammu and Kashmir. May the menace of terrorism go away sooner than later to let us live peacefully,” Bukhari said in a post on X.
