Chennai, Nov 4 – The Chennai Crime Branch Police arrested one person in connection with the case involving the alleged cheating of popular Tamil film actress Gautami. The actress accused the individual of usurping her properties on the promise of selling them. Gautami, who recently resigned from the BJP after 25 years, claimed that the party leaders were supporting the accused, and her complaint filed with the police had seen no progress.
The arrested individual is one of the accused who was absconding. Gautami had filed a complaint stating that she owned property in Kottaiyur Village, Tiruvallur District, covering 8.63 acres. In 2015, Balaraman of Anna Nagar and Raghunathan of Chengalpet promised to sell her properties and obtained a General Power of Attorney in their favor.
Later, they sold her properties to a Mumbai-based company, M/s Jaya Hind Investments Pvt Ltd, along with 23 adjacent properties, providing her Rs. 4.10 crores as the sale consideration for her properties. In 2021, after receiving a notice from the Income Tax Department, Gautami discovered that Balaraman and Raghunathan had sold her properties for Rs. 12 crores, paid only Rs. 4.10 crores, and misappropriated the rest.
Following Gautami’s complaint, the Entrustment Document Fraud Wing-I of CCB registered a case and initiated an investigation. The Chennai City Police Commissioner Sandeep Rai Rathore ordered the arrest of the absconding accused. The arrest was made by a team led by S. John Victor, Assistant Commissioner of Police, EDF-I, CCB. The accused, Balaraman (64), was produced before the CCB & CBCID Special Court, Egmore, and remanded to judicial custody after interrogation.
