Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 18: Kerala Tourism is set to enhance the charm of cinema tourism with a focus on the iconic ‘Kireedam’ bridge in Vellayani, a key location from the cult classic Malayalam film starring Mohanlal. The government has sanctioned Rs 1,22,50,000 for the ‘Cine Tourism Project — Kireedam Palam at Vellayani,’ scheduled to be completed in 18 months. The project aims to attract cinephiles and tourists to the picturesque bridge, which gained fame after featuring in the emotional scenes of the 1989 blockbuster ‘Kireedam.’ This initiative is part of Kerala Tourism’s broader Experiential Tourism concept, offering visitors a comprehensive experience of the state’s vibrant culture.
The ‘Kireedam’ bridge is the first venture under the Cinema Tourism project, with Bekal Fort in Kasaragod, another iconic location featured in Mani Ratnam’s ‘Bombay,’ also identified for development. Tourism Minister PA Mohamed Riyas highlighted the significance of picturesque locations associated with hit movies, and Kerala Tourism plans to identify and promote such spots across all districts. Filmmaker Mani Ratnam expressed support for the project during a meeting with Minister Riyas, agreeing to participate in the Cinema Tourism program at Bekal.
Kerala Tourism Secretary K Biju is optimistic that the Experiential Tourism concept will gain momentum through the Cinema Tourism project. Director PB Nooh emphasized that the initiative will complement the Department of Tourism’s efforts in identifying captivating tourism centers to attract visitors.”
