New Delhi, Oct 16: Former Chief Election Commissioner of India, Manohar Singh Gill, breathed his last on Sunday at a private hospital in South Delhi. The Election Commission of India issued a statement expressing condolences on the demise of Gill, who served as the 11th Chief Election Commissioner.
A member of the 1958 batch of the Indian Administrative Services, Punjab cadre, Gill held the position of Chief Election Commissioner from December 1996 to June 2001. The Election Commission highlighted the successful conduct of General Elections and General Elections to Legislative Assemblies in over 20 states during his tenure.
Acknowledging his exceptional service, Gill was honored with the Padma Vibhushan in 2000. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge paid tribute to Gill, stating, “As a valued colleague in the UPA government and earlier as a civil servant, his contributions to the nation’s development in various fields like sports, electoral processes, and agriculture were long-lasting.” The statement concludes with a prayer for Gill’s eternal peace and condolences to his family, friends, and followers.
